📸 Photo tips that make the difference
Get the whole bird in frame
Head, body, tail, and ideally both wings. A crisp half-bird is harder to ID than a blurry whole one. Zoom with the lens (2× or 4×), not by cropping later.
Wait quietly — don't chase it
Birds clock a fidgeter. Find a spot, stay still, and let them come to you. You'll get a better shot, and you won't stress the bird.
Front-facing beats silhouette
Bill shape, eye stripe, breast markings — the AI reads these best. Side-on or facing you beats a backlit silhouette every time.
Two angles help more than one
Upload two photos of the same bird — one showing the breast, one the back or wing. The AI uses both together, the same way an experienced birder does.
Good light matters
A sunny morning works better than overcast midday. Avoid shooting into the light source — the bird becomes a dark blob and loses all its identifying colours.
Take several frames
Birds move. One blurry shot is not enough. Rattle off 3–4 frames and pick the sharpest. Burst mode helps if your phone supports it.
🔍 What to clock before the shot
Mental notes you take in the field stay with the sighting even if the photo is imperfect.
Size
Robin-sized? Pigeon-sized? Use a bird you know as the mental yardstick.
Shape
Short dumpy body or long elegant neck? Thin bill or heavy hooked one? Tail fanned or cocked up?
Plumage
Eye stripe, wing bars, breast spots, cap colour, rump colour. Note what stands out before it flies.
Behaviour
Does it hop, run, creep up tree trunks, bob its tail? Behaviour is surprisingly diagnostic.
Habitat
Garden? Park? Woodland edge? River? The habitat narrows it down enormously.
Call
Even a rough description — loud rattling, thin high whistle, bubbling song — can clinch a tough ID later.
