The deal

It's Birds Mate is a game. You log birds you've actually seen, collect them as cards, and battle your mates. By using the app you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use it.

Your account

You must be 13 or older to create an account. You're responsible for keeping your login secure and for anything that happens under your account. One account per person — don't share accounts.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these terms, with or without notice depending on severity. If your account is terminated for breach, you are not entitled to a refund of any paid amounts.

What you can and can't do

You can use the app for personal, non-commercial birding. See our Acceptable Use Policy for the full rules. In short, you can't:

• Submit fake sightings or photos of birds you didn't see
• Cheat, reverse-engineer, or exploit bugs for unfair advantage
• Harass other users
• Use the app to scrape data or run automated scripts
• Resell or sub-licence your account or any content from it

Content you submit

You keep ownership of photos and audio you upload. By submitting them you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, process, display, and (where you've set a photo as your public card face) show that photo to other users within the app. We won't use your content for advertising without your permission.

AI identification — best effort only

The photo identification tool uses AI (Anthropic's Claude model) to suggest a species. It is a best-effort tool and can be wrong. It is not authoritative. You are responsible for verifying any sighting you log — do not rely on the AI identification for scientific, legal, or conservation record purposes.

Purchases — membership and top-up credits

We currently offer:

• Membership — £12.49 per year. Unlocks up to 20 photo IDs per day, the full 173-species catalogue, premium card finishes, and a founding-member badge. It is an annual subscription that automatically renews at £12.49/year until you cancel.
• Top-up credits — £1.99 for +20 ID uses. Consumable credits used once your daily allowance is exhausted. Credits do not expire.

14-day cooling-off right

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you normally have 14 days to cancel a digital purchase and receive a full refund. However, by completing checkout you consent to immediate access to the digital service and acknowledge that you lose the right to cancel once the service has begun being performed.

If you take out a membership and have not yet used any of its features, contact us within 14 days and we will refund you in full. Once you have used premium features (IDs, premium finishes, etc.), the waiver applies and a refund is at our discretion.

Auto-renewal and cancellation

The membership is an annual subscription. It renews automatically at £12.49 each year unless you cancel. You can cancel at any time by contacting us; we will not charge you again, and your membership stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for, after which your account returns to the free tier.

Top-up credits are consumed as used and are not refundable once used.

If we shut down

If we discontinue the app entirely, we will give at least 30 days' notice and offer a pro-rata refund on any unexpired membership based on the time remaining.

Physical print orders

Print orders are fulfilled by Prodigi. Once a print is in production it cannot be cancelled. Contact us at hello@itsbirdsmate.com if your order arrives damaged or is lost in transit — we will arrange a replacement or refund.

Availability and changes

We aim to keep the app running but can't promise 100% uptime. We may change or remove features with reasonable notice. Features may be added to or removed from the Founders tier over time — we will not remove core features already available at the time of purchase without notice and an opportunity to request a refund.

Liability

The app is provided as-is. We are not liable for data loss, service interruptions, or any indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be excluded under English law. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
