How to photograph birds on Android
Android phones vary more than iPhones โ a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and a budget Android from 2021 are genuinely different tools. But the underlying mistakes are the same across all of them, and fixing those gets you 80% of the way to a usable bird photo. This guide covers both the universal rules and device-specific shortcuts for the phones most people actually own.
Why Android bird photos often fail
Most Android camera apps try to be clever. Scene optimisation, AI enhancement, beauty modes, automatic night mode โ all of them are making decisions about your photo before you see it. For landscapes and food that processing often helps. For birds, it usually destroys fine feather detail and edge definition, which are precisely what make one brown bird different from another brown bird.
The second big problem is the zoom system. Android flagships have three or four physical lenses. Between them is digital zoom โ and most people use digital zoom constantly without knowing it. That's the fastest route to a blurry, noisy, unidentifiable photo.
1. Tap to focus โ every single time
Android autofocus on most phones defaults to face detection and then contrast detection. Birds are not faces. In a garden scene โ feeders, branches, fence, bird โ the phone picks the object with the highest contrast and sharpest edge, which is often not the bird. Tap to tell it exactly where to focus.
On Samsung phones, a long press locks both focus and exposure. On Pixel phones, tap to focus then drag the lock icon that appears. On most OnePlus phones, tap and hold. A locked exposure prevents the camera from rebalancing the exposure if a cloud passes โ which would otherwise blow out the background right as you press the shutter.
If the bird is backlit โ garden with a bright sky behind it โ tap the bird and then drag the exposure slider (where available) until the bird is properly lit, even if the sky bleaches out. A silhouetted bird is not identifiable.
2. Use optical zoom โ never digital
The zoom buttons in your viewfinder (1ร, 2ร, 3ร, 5ร, 10ร โ depending on your phone) are real physical lenses. Switching to one is free and sharp. Pinching between those markers uses digital zoom โ the phone interpolates pixels it doesn't have, adding noise and softness across the frame.
Samsung Galaxy users: The S21 Ultra and S22 onwards have a 10ร Space Zoom. It sounds impressive. In practice, 10ร on a handheld Android in a garden setting is nearly unusable โ any movement blurs the frame completely. 3ร is usually your practical ceiling for a sharp shot. The 10ร periscope works well on a tripod or against a wall.
Google Pixel users: The Pixel 8 and newer have a 5ร optical zoom. It's well-stabilised and genuinely usable handheld โ arguably the most bird-friendly zoom in any flagship right now. Use it.
3. Pro mode is your friend (on Samsung)
Samsung's Pro mode gives you direct control over ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and focus. For bird photography in decent light this is the best mode available on the phone. Set ISO as low as you can (100โ200 in sunlight, up to 400 in shade) to keep the image clean. Set shutter speed to at least 1/500s โ ideally 1/1000s for any bird that might move.
The hidden benefit: Pro mode turns off scene optimisation and AI enhancement, so you get the raw-ish output from the sensor without the phone deciding your robin should be sharpened and colour-boosted into looking like concept art.
4. Burst mode โ use it
Birds are unpredictable. A garden robin will sit beautifully still for three seconds and then fling itself at another robin across the lawn right as you press the shutter. A pigeon will decide to shake its head the exact moment the lens is sharpest.
Burst gives you a range of moments to pick from. It also hedges against minor hand tremor โ across 6 rapid frames, at least one is usually well-timed and steady.
Pixel users: Top Shot mode takes a burst and automatically selects the sharpest frame with eyes open (for animals too, in recent versions). Turn it on in camera settings.
5. Stability matters more at zoom
Optical image stabilisation on Android flagships is good but not magic. At 3ร zoom, effective camera shake is multiplied threefold. Even a slightly shaky hold produces images that look sharp on the small phone screen but are soft when you look at them at full size โ exactly what the AI has to work with.
Hold the phone with both hands, elbows tucked in. If there's a fence, a car roof, a gate post โ lean the phone against it. Use your Bluetooth earbuds as a remote shutter (volume up on most earbuds fires the camera app). Shoot on the exhale, not mid-breath.
6. Turn off the stuff that hurts you
Samsung's Scene Optimiser identifies your scene and applies enhancement โ "Animal," "Food," "Landscape" etc. The animal enhancement sharpens edges and boosts saturation in a way that makes feather patterns look artificial and sometimes incorrect โ which confuses the ID. Turn it off in Camera settings โ Scene Optimiser toggle.
7. Use the circle tool on upload
After uploading your photo in It's Birds Mate, draw a circle around the bird before hitting Identify. This crops the image to just the bird before the AI processes it โ instead of analysing a garden-fence-feeder-sky scene, it gets a clean crop of the subject you actually want to identify.
Particularly useful on Android because many Android cameras apply post-processing that can make the overall image look slightly soft at the edges โ cropping in tight often reveals the bird is sharper than the surroundings. Your GPS location is still read from the original photo; the circle only affects what the AI is shown.
