How to photograph birds on an iPhone
Your iPhone camera is genuinely capable of producing identifiable bird photos โ but only if you know which settings to use and which to ignore. This guide is for logging birds on It's Birds Mate, not winning wildlife photographer of the year. Different goal, different tactics.
Why most iPhone bird photos fail
The iPhone camera is designed to make humans look good in daylight. Birds are small, fast, often backlit, and they do not hold still for your convenience. The phone's computational photography assumes a stationary subject in good light โ and when those assumptions break, the results are blurry, noisy, overprocessed mush.
The fix is not a better phone. It's knowing which of your phone's features to use and when.
1. Tap to focus โ every time
iPhone's autofocus is face-detection first, then contrast detection. Birds are not faces. In a garden scene the phone will happily focus on a fence post, a leaf, or absolutely nothing, while your blue tit is a soft blob in the background.
Tap the bird. You'll see the yellow focus square snap to it. A long press locks both focus and exposure (AE/AF Lock) โ useful if the bird might move slightly or if the background light is changing. Locked exposure means the phone won't suddenly rebalance the shot right as you press the shutter.
After a tap-to-focus, the sun icon appears. Swipe down to darken the exposure if the sky behind the bird is blowing out โ a silhouetted bird with visible sky is unidentifiable.
2. Use optical zoom โ never digital
Modern iPhones have multiple physical lenses: typically 0.5ร, 1ร, and 2ร (or 3ร on Pro models). These are real optics โ switching between them is free, sharp, and lossless. Pinching past the last lens button into digital zoom just crops and enlarges the sensor data, adding noise and destroying the fine detail you need for identification.
At 2ร or 3ร optical you can fill more of the frame with a bird at reasonable distance. That's usually the right call. If you're too far away for even 3ร to fill the frame adequately, the honest answer is: move closer first, then zoom. Or accept that this one isn't going to ID cleanly and use the manual species selector instead.

3. Shoot multiple frames โ always
Hold the shutter button and drag left to shoot a burst (hold and drag right to record video). Or just tap rapidly. With birds, volume is your friend โ a robin can shake its head, flick a wing, or hop completely off frame in the time it takes you to look at your shot and decide to take another.
After shooting, the Photos app will suggest the best frame from a burst. It's usually right about sharpness, but it might not pick the best angle for identification โ check all frames yourself before uploading.
4. Camera shake is the enemy
At 2ร or 3ร zoom, even small hand tremors produce visible blur. The longer the effective focal length, the worse the shake penalty. iPhone's optical image stabilisation (OIS) helps, but it has limits โ particularly in lower light or at maximum optical zoom.
Brace your elbows against your body or rest the phone on a fence post, tree trunk, or your bag. Use the volume button on your headphones as a remote shutter โ it fires without touching the phone. Hold your breath for the moment of shooting, same as you would with a rifle. It sounds extreme for phone photography but the difference is measurable.
5. Modes to use โ and modes to avoid
Action mode (iPhone 14+) is worth using for birds in flight โ it's specifically designed to stabilise moving subjects and accepts some resolution loss in exchange. For a bird sitting on a branch, it's unnecessary overhead.
ProRAW and ProRes are overkill for ID photos โ they're large files that slow you down when the bird won't stay still. Keep them off unless you're shooting for the wall.
6. Draw the circle โ it changes the ID
After uploading your photo in It's Birds Mate, drag a circle around the bird before hitting Identify. The app crops to that region before sending it to the AI โ so instead of analysing a garden scene hoping to find a bird in it, the model gets a tight crop of just the bird.
This is especially important if there are multiple birds in frame, or if the background is visually busy (dense foliage, brick walls, feeders). Circle the one you want to identify. The GPS is still read from your original photo โ the circle only affects what the AI sees.
